Burley Tobacco – Tanzania’s Golden Leaf, Perfected by 3H Tobacco Company Limited

At 3H Tobacco Company Limited, we take pride in producing high-quality Burley Tobacco that meets the stringent demands of the global market. Known for its light air-cured profile, high nicotine content, and low sugar levels, our Burley tobacco is ideal for cigarettes and blended products.

🌍 Where It’s Grown – Burley Tobacco Regions in Tanzania

Our Burley tobacco thrives in the rich agricultural zones of Tanzania, where generations of farmers continue to perfect their craft.

  • Iringa Region
The fertile highlands of Iringa provide the perfect environment for cultivating bright, clean Burley leaves. The well-drained soils and cool climate contribute to large leaf development and low nitrate content.

  • Mbeya & Chunya
Known for their consistent rainfall and slightly acidic soils, Mbeya and Chunya districts are top contributors to our premium-grade Burley production. The altitude supports a longer growing season for better leaf maturity.

  • Ruvuma (Songea District)
A developing zone for Burley with vast arable land, Songea is gaining recognition for its tobacco with ideal burn properties and good texture.

  • Morogoro & Manyoni (Singida Region)
These areas supply tobacco with unique regional flavor notes and strong leaf integrity. Their semi-arid conditions yield leaves with excellent drying characteristics.

🌱 From Seed to Harvest – The Cultivation Cycle

  1. Seedling & Transplanting
Burley starts in protected nurseries and is transplanted to open fields when seedlings are strong enough. We work closely with smallholder farmers, offering technical support to ensure quality from the start.

  2. Field Care
The crop is nurtured through regular watering, topping, and sucker control to ensure full leaf development. Farmers also adhere to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to meet global compliance standards.

  3. Harvesting
When the leaves reach full maturity, they’re harvested from the bottom up in stages—allowing each level of the plant to reach optimal thickness and color.

🍃 Air-Curing – Where the Magic Happens

Once harvested, the green leaves are hung in well-ventilated curing barns for 4 to 8 weeks:

  • Natural Airflow replaces the need for direct heat.

  • This process helps retain the leaf’s light brown color while reducing sugars and locking in the signature Burley flavor—mild, yet strong.

🏭 Processing at 3H – Clean, Safe, and Efficient

Our tobacco is delivered to our modern processing facility in Iringa, where we ensure the final product is export-ready:

  • Hand Sorting & Grading
Our expert team grades the leaves by color, structure, and elasticity, ensuring only top-tier tobacco moves forward.

  • Moisture Control
Carefully regulated to meet packaging and shipment standards and to preserve the tobacco’s quality during storage.

  • Packaging & Labeling
We use international-standard bales with tracking codes to provide full transparency and traceability—from farmer to client.
